Mock Crash Exercise at MCC High School

Today, area emergency personnel worked together to stage a mock crash scene for MCC students in grades 9–12. The scene simulated a DUI collision between a pickup and a four-door sedan.

Emergency responders used the live exercise to demonstrate the real-life impact of poor decisions. Following the event, they spoke with students about the dangers of drunk driving and encouraged them to consider careers in emergency response.

A special thank you to Tri-County EMS, Newfolden Fire Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, and Minnesota State Patrol for leading this powerful learning experience. We also thank MCC Social Worker Laura Underdahl for helping coordinate the event and preparing the student volunteers who took part.

Summer Weight Room Schedule - this is for any students entering 7th-12th next school year!
Congratulations to our April Staff of the Month - Ellen Petersen! 1. What is your position at MCC and how long have you been working here? I am one of two fantastic high school English teachers. I’ve been working here for the last 7 years. 2. What is one of your hidden talents? I can fold both an inflatable origami crane and an origami crane that has flapping wings. 3. What is your dream vacation? I’d really like to go to England at some point. It’s so full of history, not just of our language, but of my family members. 4. If you won the lottery and decided to give up working for the school, what would you do instead? I would probably go back to school to be an English professor, a librarian, a forester, or a park ranger. 5. What is your favorite meal from the cafeteria? I have yet to try any meals from the cafeteria, but the long johns are pretty good! 6. What makes a good day at school? Having positive interactions with my coworkers and my students, and teaching my students about something in my subject area about which I am passionate. 7. If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share? A couple of things: All the drama that you’re struggling through right now will not matter even a little bit in 5, 10, 15 years from now. In the grand scheme of your life, your teenage years are only maybe 10% or less of your lifespan, so don’t let such a short time be ruined by worrying about what other people think! Don’t be in such a hurry to grow up! I remember wanting to have my own money and freedom to do anything I wanted. Adulthood isn’t only freedom. Responsibilities are the price you pay for that freedom. So enjoy the part of your life where you have fewer responsibilities, where you can try on different versions of yourself and find out which ones fit! 8. What is your favorite memory from when you were in school? In Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish class, we had read a series of annoying stories written in Spanish about a traveling couple called “Susana and Javier.” For one assignment after we had finished the series, we had to write a skit about how we think the next part of the series would have gone. My group and I were VERY done with Susana and Javier, so in our skit, we had Susana get Javier lost in a dust storm (to which he was allergic), and then go hang out at an oasis in the Atacama desert, never to be seen or heard from again, much to the joy of Spanish students everywhere. 9. What is your favorite t.v. show and why? I have many that I return to often, but right now, I’m in the middle of a rewatch of Bones. I enjoy the blend of science and narrative. It teaches me about areas of science that I don’t engage with regularly, and helps to expand my vocabulary. Congratulations!
